Pyramid Control at Ban Me Thuot City Field (aka: Camp Coryell)

The theme for this album is the radar site next to the dirt runway known as Ban Me Thuot City Field.  In 1965 - 66 the compound was shared by the 155th Attack Helicopter Company (Stagecoach), a detachment Forward Air Controllers from the 19th TASS (call sign Baron at that time) and Pyramid Control.  The compound was later known as Camp Coryell.

BARON IS AIRBORNE

Our FAC's callsign was Baron. They didn't usually control strikes at night, so I'm guessing he's headed to Pleiku.

TPS-1B ANTENNA

This is probably the fanciest tower a TPS-1B ever saw. It was soon replaced by a bigger and better unit.

C-47 landing on our 2,000' dirt strip know as Ban Me Thuout City Field. Gooney Birds, Caribou's, & C-123 Providers were the biggest planes to land there.

BRINGING HOME THE BARON

MOONGLOW OVER PYRAMID

RB-57's, callsign Moonglow, would work the area around Ban Me Thout and when possible, we'd request a "bubble check". Frequently, they'd make a couple of passes and then head home. On this occasion, on one pass, Moonglow made an approach on the 2,000' dirt strip, including landing gear down, flaps down, and speed brakes extended. Two Army guys were washing a Huey right next to the runway, when Moonglow came cruising by. Neither of them saw him until he was almost on top and they both jumped off the chooper when they heard him. I looked over and the pilot looked over at us, waved, gave it full throttle, sucked everything and was into the wild blue yonder. What a show. Circa spring 1966.

Someone, Joe Urban I think, saw this in a newspaper as Vietnam fell. Pyramid's radar tower is very clearly seen in the background.

The Operations building is in front. Entry was through the alluminum "door" on the left. The TPS-1B is "protected by a parachute and was still that way when I left in Sept. 1966.
